| We would like to take this section to answer some of our frequently asked questions: Clubs that register and offer events for Patterdale Terriers: PTCA Patterdale Terrier Club of America NPTA National Patterdale Terrier Association ARBA American Rare Breed Association UKC United Kennel Club CKC Canine Kennel Club ADBA American Dog Breeders Association AWTA American Working Terrier Association Bluegrass Working Terrier Association AADR All American Dog Registry CFTC Central Florida Terrier Club Questions: I am constantly asked do Patterdale Terriers make good house and companion pets. This question cannot be answered with just a yes or a no answer. Patterdale Terriers are just that, terriers. Although small and sweet they are still working dogs above all and are still terriers. This does not mean that they do not make good pets or that they will be miserable should you chose to spay or neuter your terrier and keep it as strictly a pet. As long as you are prepared to keep your high spirited terrier mentally stimulated, you should have no problem keeping a Patterdale as a pet. I do not reccomend a Patterdale for a person who lives in an apartment or without a yard unless you are prepared to walk, run and excercise your terrier for several hours each day. Another question I am asked frequently that I would like to touch base at this time is if there is any health benefit to spaying or neutering you dog. If you do not plan to use your pet for breeding I always recommend that the animal is spayed or neutered. In female dogs it brings the rate considerably down for Uterine and Breast Cancer as well as Pyometra and Testicular and Colon Cancer in males. Are Patterdales hard to house train is another question that I am asked frequently. Other then the fact that they are a small dog and need to use the bathroom more frequently then large dogs I do not think they are any harder. However, males do like to mark their territory and I have found with also having females around some will never stop marking. I'm also asked often if Patterdales have any common health problems. Being a hybrid I have found no common problems that Patterdales are genetically linked to. |
